50-inch Muskie Size Limit Results

 In News and Press Releases

NMI chapter members had sponsored citizen resolutions for increasing muskie size limits to 50-inches on White Sand Lake in Boulder Junction, the Cisco chain of lakes, Trout Lake and Little St. Germain Lake in Vilas County. Previously only Clear Lake in Oneida County and Big Sand Lake in Vilas County had 50’ size limits.

Several of our proposals passed. Lake Katherine, the Willow Flowage in Oneida County, Little St. Germain, North Twin, South Twin and Trout Lake in Vilas County all have 50” size limits since last season effective May 26, 2018!

That only leaves the Cisco chain of lakes and White Sand Lake in Boulder Junction yet to have our 50-inch size limit proposals adopted. The preliminary results of the long and thorough Wisconsin Conservation Congress process look promising that these size limit regulations will also be adopted.

We will continue to keep you posted and look forward to improving trophy muskie potential here in the northwoods. In addition, our board members have also had preliminary discussions with DNR fisheries biologists about stocking to create “action lakes” where youth or novice fisherman have a high likelihood of success in catching muskie. These action lakes typically have limited trophy potential but can support higher muskie density. We welcome suggestions from our members regarding other lakes that may be suitable for higher size limits or designation as an action lake.

We encourage you to attend the spring hearings for either Oneida or Vilas counties on Monday, April 8, 2019.
