Chapter Newsletter for June 2024

 In News and Press Releases

Hello Northwoods Musky anglers!

We’re all thrilled that the season has finally arrived and we can get back to the business of chasing muskies. We have several activities coming up and would like to remind you of those along with a few other related items.

We kick off the summer with our first of three Kids Fishing Days on Tuesday June 11 at the Minocqua fishing pier. All kids are welcome to attend. We will provide live bait and will have a limited amount of rods and reels available to use free of charge if a child doesn’t have their own gear. The fishing is usually pretty good at the pier and this is a great way to introduce young ones to the sport of fishing or to help advance the skills of youth anglers. We can definitely use a few adult helpers to assist with baiting hooks, taking fish off, netting, knot tying and all the usual chores of fishing. Please consider showing up. We fish from 5:00 till 7:00 pm and kids will be given a prize for attending. If you have questions please contact Jeff Kinnally Jwkinnally@Gmail.com. (715) 271-2236

Next up is our June “On the Water Meeting”. On Tuesday June 25 grab a partner and go fish from 4:00-8:30 on the lake of your choice. At 9:00 we’ll meet up and compare notes about who caught what, enjoy some fellowship, and award the big fish pot. To participate in the June big fish pot contact Jim Cheshire and let him know you’re in. A photo of your fish preferably on a bump board is requested to win the big fish of the evening. Pot is $10.00 per participating angler and can be paid at the meet up. Jim Cheshire can be contacted at (715) 892-4223. We will be meeting at Hazelhurst Pub on Hwy 51.

Speaking of big fish, don’t forget to register your fish on the Muskies Inc. Members Only Fishing Contest. It’s easy to do and this will keep a permanent record of your catches for you. Just go to the MI website and make your entries. The data collected for the contest is frequently used by DNR personnel to research Musky fishing in our area as well as the whole country. Some of this data actually assists in DNR decisions about stocking and other related musky resource issues. To encourage our members to participate we offer several incentives. Winners of the various categories (Mens, Mens Masters, Womens, Womens Masters, and Youth will receive a plaque commemorating their achievement at our annual awards banquet. The winners of the biggest fish registered in our chapter for the months of June through November will receive a $50.00 gift card to Last Cast Outfitters in St. Germain. And of course the biggest fish of the year registered by a chapter member will receive a replica mount of their fish from Fittante Replicas. Again, a clear photo of your fish on a bump board or other verifiable measuring device is required to confirm your catch.

Coming up in July we will have our second Kids Fishing Day on July 9. Our chapter will also have a booth at the Musky Shop Musky Bash on July 20. Our July on the water meeting will be July 30 and meeting at the Black Bear west of Minocqua. Landy Roepke is putting the finishing touches on a tournament we will hold this fall. Details will be available shortly. Keep your eye on our website, Facebook page and your inbox for more details on all these events.

Finally, please remember that one of our most significant fund raisers of the year is the money generated by purchasing tickets for the Wisconsin Musky Clubs Alliance raffle boat. We realize a return of between approximately .65 to .75 cents of every dollar sold by our chapter. Tickets are available at Last Cast Outfitters, Fibbers, and Premier Power Sports. This year’s Recon boat, motor, and trailer package is a beauty. We will have it to display in July at Last Cast and possibly the Musky Bash. If you need tickets or know a business that would sell for us please contact Pete Stoltman at (715) 614-4142 and we can get you hooked up.

Thanks to all our members and board of directors for everything you do to enhance our fishery and spread the word about Musky conservation issues. Have a great season and be careful on the water.

Pete Stoltman (just a guy who loves to fish blah, blah, blah)
