Northwoods Muskies Chapter Newsletter, March 2014
Greetings to all and hope you’re surviving the polar vortex. We are all getting anxious for the season to start but we’ve got a little way to go. In the meantime we’ve got plenty of things to do and planning for our upcoming year.
March General Membership Meeting
Start the month off with Northwoods Muskies. We will be having a general membership meeting this coming Tuesday March, 11 at Fibbers in St. Germain. We start off with a social hour at 6:00 pm and the meeting will start promptly at 7:00. Our own Matt Raley will be our speaker. Given Matt’s success in the area I’m sure this is a topic you won’t want to miss.
Annual Kickoff Meeting
Be sure to mark your calendar for the Chapter Kickoff Meeting on Saturday, April 5. We will meet at the Pointe Resort in Minocqua. This is our big spring fundraiser and will include dinner and our special guest speaker Ken Jackson. Tickets for the event are $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for youth. We will have tons of raffles and door prizes. Keep your eye on the website and at the March meeting for more details.
Membership
Many of our members are coming up for renewal now or very shortly. We had a very successful first year of operation and learned a lot along the way. We look forward to building on our foundation and making this a breakout year for Northwoods Muskies. We need your help! Please renew your membership promptly when you receive notification. Better yet, why not bring along a new friend to join our ranks? It’s easy to renew your membership online or if you have questions check with one of the board members. We will be happy to guide you through the renewal and new membership process if you need help.
Musky Alliance Raffle Boat
Our chapter has joined the Wisconsin Muskie Clubs Alliance. As a member of this organization we are able to sell tickets for the “Alliance Boat” that will be raffled off at the World Championship in Eagle River this August. This beautiful Ranger boat is on display this week at Rollie & Helen’s Musky Shop and we will have access to the boat a couple more times this year before the raffle. If you would like to purchase tickets or would like some tickets to sell please check with Mike Sasse. Tickets will be available at the Musky Shop all year as well. Our chapter benefits by receiving a portion of the proceeds for ticket sales.
Spring Classic Musky Tournament
Our neighbors at Headwaters Chapter will again be hosting the 34th annual Spring Classic Musky Tournament. The tournament is held June 14 and 15. For more information visit the Headwaters website at www.headwatersmuskies.com .
Save the Date
Speaking of tournaments, we will be hosting our own tournament the Northwoods Muskie Open on June 28. This is our first tournament and will be a one day event. Fishing will be on 6 Minocqua area lake groups. Entry fee for the tournament is $50.00 per angler and $25.00 for juniors under 16. Major sponsors for the tournament are Fittante Taxidermy, Rollie & Helen’s Musky Shop, and Island City Lanes. Prizes will include a replica mount for the longest fish caught from Fittante Taxidermy and over$1000.00 in gift cards from the Musky Shop. For more information visit the tournament page on our website at

Opportunities for Service
We are all very busy people and appreciate that the time of our volunteers has value. This organization has goals of moving ahead and making very positive progress in improving the fisheries of our area while providing both educational and social components for our membership. We need your help. As we grow as an organization the work load for a very small group of volunteers can become unwieldy. We are currently searching for more volunteers to assist both in support roles and to serve in board director positions. Our immediate need would be for someone to take on the position of Membership Director. This is primarily a clerical position and familiarity with Excel spreadsheet programs is helpful. We also would like to lock in a Youth Activities director to initiate our commitment to serving the young people in our organization. You don’t have to “go it alone”. We have a good amount of people who are willing to assist in these positions. What we need are people who have good organizational and communication skills to spearhead these two areas. If you have an interest in helping or would like more information about these positions please contact any of our board members. I think all the current board members would agree that their participation in the first year of the Northwoods Muskies Chapter has been fun and rewarding.
